The Suna & Inan Kirac Kaleici Museum

The Suna & Inan Kirac Kaleici Museum

Kaleiçi Museum was inaugurated on the 18th of May 1996, after Suna and inan Kirac purchased two ruined buildings registered as ‘cultural assets under protection’ in the Old City (Kaleiçi) of Antalya and committeed them to an eloborate restoration from 199 to 1995 for their present status. The museum is apart of the Suna & İnan Kirac Research İnstitute on Mediterranean Ciivilizations (AKMED) of Vehbi Koç Foundation.

The Museum site comprises two independent buildings, the first one of which is a typical two-storeye Antalya house with the traditional outer sofa, an indispensible outdoor living area of old Antalya houses. The mosaic floor, welcoming visitors at the entrance, is made of pebbles from Konyaaltı sea coast, embedded in a special mortar. These mosaics reflect an age-old tradition featuring floral and geometric compositions. Such decorative practice also serves a practical purpose, as water left among the pebbles after washing cools the courtyard uring hot summer days.
İn the ‘Hayat’ section the upper floor of the house, visitor will feel the atmocphere of Antalya in the 19th centurt, as they watch playing in the house children, the old photographs on display and the reflection from ‘the mirror of the past’ . This hall includes a timeline with selected events from the history of the city.
The three room leading to the ‘Hayat’section are full of the sweet bustle of wedding preparations.İn the first room, guests are chatting as theye are offered some coffee and citrus jam, while othe of the bride proudly shows the complete troussesu she put together.
İn the second room, the ‘Bridegroom’s shave’ is in progress. İn the last room the ‘Henna Night’ is staged. The attractrive friends of the bride bring in the henna, accompanied by the touching ‘Bride’s Lament’played by Zeynep Hanım, ‘the folk rhymes’. These traditions gradually withering away in our days.İn order to create an architactural atmosphere of the period, the wooden stripped ceilings and hand-drawn ornaments used in the interior design of the house are inspired by the Tekelioğlu Mansion whichis one of the important buildings of Kaleiçi.
The second building of the Kaleiçi Museum is situated just near to Antalya House. Before here was an Orthodox church dedicated to Aya Yorgi (St. George). The Karamanlı inscription i.e. Turkish written with Greek letters, above its portal recprds the restoration of 1863 . One of the historical monumants of the city., the church building has a simple rectangular hall with a nave and a vaulted superstructure. The main hall, whose walls and vault are embellished with hand-drawn ornaments, houses the permanent exhibits of Kütahya and Çanakkale ceramics, while the women’s gallery , hosts temporary ehibitions
